Chekhower received the title of International Master of Tournament Chess at the first award in 1950 . In 1956 he became international referee for chess compositions and in 1961 international master for chess compositions . He was a two-time master of sports of the USSR , both in chess and chess composition, and the author of several chess books.
Chekhower has published more than 100 studies since 1936 , 70 of which are included in his anthology published in 1959. The systematic in this book shows the areas in which he was active: positional draw, systematic movement, geometric motifs, romantic themes.
At the beginning of his career as a study composer, he revised romantic studies of other authors and strove to bring them into a more economical form. Often he succeeded in preserving the paradoxical thought after simplifying material-intensive positions, but required a somewhat overloaded analysis.
In the following years he found his own style and composed a number of independent works. Between 1947 and 1965 he took part in the 1st to 7th individual championship of the Soviet Union for chess composition.
