Wladimer Tschanturia ( Georgian ვლადიმერ ჭანტურია ; born July 1, 1978 in Poti , Georgian SSR ) is a Georgian heavyweight boxer .

amateur

Tschanturia took part for Georgia as a light heavyweight in the Junior World Championship in Havana in 1996 , but lost the first fight.

In 1997 Tschanturia took part in the World Championships , but retired in the first fight against Kai Brannkarr, Finland (16: 6). The following year he finished in the quarterfinals of the European Championships .

In 1999 Tschanturia won the bronze medal at the World Military Championships and the following year he celebrated his greatest success at the Olympic Games in Sydney : winning the Olympic bronze medal. He beat the Uzbek Ruslan Chagayev , Uzbekistan (18:12), but had no chance against Sultan Ibragimow , Russia (19: 4).

At the World Championships 2001 Tschanturia lost in the first fight against Csaba Kurtucz, Hungary (DQ 3rd).

He later switched to the super heavyweight division, but was less successful in the open class. At the 2004 European Championships, he did not take part in his scheduled fight against Alexander Powetkin due to injury .

professional

In 2006 he turned professional at the age of 28. He won his first eight fights against unknown compatriots before he won the Georgian heavyweight championship against David Gegeshidze by knockout in the 6th round in May 2007. After three more wins in 2008, he lost his 12th fight against the Ukrainian Volodymyr Lazebnyk on points. After a long break from competition, Tschanturia returned to the ring in May 2010 and was able to win his comeback. Nevertheless, he ended his career after this fight and retired from active sports.
