Vladimir Stepanov

Wladimir Ivanovich Stepanow ( Russian Владимир Иванович Степанов , scientific transliteration Vladimir Ivanovič Stepanov ; born June 29, 1866 , † January 28, 1896 ) was a Russian dancer in the Imperial Ballet in Saint Petersburg .

Stepanow published dance notation in 1892 under the title L'Alphabet des Mouvements du Corps Humain .

What is special about this notation is that the dance movements are not coded by abstract symbols, but by musical notes in a notation system. Stepanow breaks down complex sequences of movements into the movements that individual body joints can perform and assigns certain forms of musical notes to these basic elements.
