Atlas acquired the mining rights to the mine in February 2008 from Talison Minerals Pty Ltd, now Global Advanced Metals.
Atlas took the project from the first wells to production readiness in a year and a half. This was possible because there was an unused production structure of the tantalum mine owned by Global Advanced Metals . The tantalum mine was put back into operation in January 2010.
Atlas began producing iron ore in the Wodgina mine in July 2010. It was planned to increase production from 2010 with 6.5 million tons of iron ore to 20 million tons of iron ore in 2012. The aim was to extract 10 million tons from the Turner River Hub . These were later to be supplemented by additional ore from the mines to the north at Wodgina, Abydos and Mount Webber .
Atlas expected that there would be a settlement with BHP Billiton and that they could use the existing rail infrastructure of the Goldsworthy Railway in the future. At the end of 2010, BHP promised to examine the matter in a feasibility study.
