The residential and commercial buildings at Borsbergstrasse 23–33 / 16–32 form a listed building complex in Dresden , which was built from 1955 to 1958 according to designs by Herbert Schneider (urban development), Wolfgang Hänsch , Gottfried Kintzer and Gerd Dettmar .

assessment

The construction of these buildings represented the “beginning of the large-block style” in Dresden and, according to Beate Lüsch, proves that industrialized construction does not necessarily have to mean “uniformity and lack of expression” . The construction of the complex is an example of the beginning of the artistic way of industrialized building in the GDR in the 1960s. Nevertheless, the coloring of the building and the technology of the construction was criticized. Because of its “ technical character” , the construction was compared with “capitalist architecture”.

description

Residential and commercial buildings

On the north side of Borsbergstrasse , two elongated, five-story residential buildings with pitched roofs were built, each of which is interrupted by passageways. Both at the east and at the west end of the development, the block of houses was set back somewhat, which enlarged the pedestrian zone. The facades of the buildings were provided with colored fine plaster and latex paint, a geometric, color-contrasting pattern and a relief-like panel construction. There are presented shops on the ground floor of the residential buildings. The long and undivided gable roofs connect to the facade after a narrow cornice.

Apartment high-rise

An eight-storey high- rise apartment building with a flat roof and triangular protruding balconies is located at the eastern end of Borsbergstrasse 32. Since this is perpendicular to the residential buildings, it forms the spatial closure. The high-rise building on Borsbergstraße was built as a reuse project in different parts of the city, for example on Striesener Straße . A vertical structure, a separate ground floor zone, a cantilevered roof slab and the triangular balconies being placed on top of each other are the hallmarks of the high-rise. The original colors were yellow and pigeon blue for the facade and red for the gable. You should give the building complex its "own, cheerful note".
