Living in the countryside

Wohnen im Grünen was a popular magazine in the GDR . The target group of the magazine were GDR citizens with gardens and allotments that were widespread. In 1989 there were around 1.5 million members in the Association of Allotment Gardeners in the GDR.

New types of fruit and vegetables as well as ornamental plants were presented, and tips on cultivation and fertilization were given. In addition, there were u. a. Tips on extending the arbor or on balcony planting, plants in the workplace or urban greenery were discussed. One focus was often on the supply of fruit and vegetables for personal use, but also on self-made garden and balcony furniture or play equipment for children. Life in allotment gardens also played an important role.

The magazine was published by Verlag für die Frau (Leipzig, Berlin) and was also available abroad. It was first published irregularly and then three times a year between 1970 and 1990. The magazine cost 3.50 marks at the end of the 1980s . From the first edition in 1989, it appeared completely in color. Editor-in-chief was Gerda Glindemann.
