The publishing house for women was the only fashion and advice publisher in the GDR .

history

Its forerunner was the Otto Beyer publishing house, founded in Leipzig in 1890 . The Otto Beyer publishing house was expropriated by the referendum in Saxony on June 30, 1946 and transferred to the administration of the city of Leipzig. From this, the publishing house for women was founded on July 1, 1946 , and from 1948 it was affiliated to the Association of People's Own Companies Printing and Publishing Leipzig . The publishing house was then assigned to the printing and publishing office in Berlin (East), and later to the Association of Organizational Companies, Zentrag . In addition to numerous women's magazines, the publisher also published numerous books on the topics of cooking and baking, household, wife and family, hobbies and leisure, as well as hand-colored art papers, sewing patterns and handicraft templates and other non-fiction books. The cookery and baking books in particular were extremely popular. The GDR leadership awarded the publisher the Patriotic Order of Merit in Silver (1971) and the Order of the Banner of Labor Level I.

After the end of the GDR, Gong Verlag bought the publishing house for women. Since, apart from the magazine Guter Rat, the other three main titles could not establish themselves permanently on the West German magazine market, the Gong Verlag ended the “Adventure Publishing for Women” after a few years. The magazine Guter Rat, founded in 1945 by the Otto Beyer publishing house, appeared quarterly in the GDR as a socialist consumer magazine with an average circulation of around 768,500 copies before the fall of the Wall. It survived the "adventure" and is still published today, now by Superillu- Verlag ( Burda media group ).

Since 1996, the " BuchVerlag für die Frau " has continued the book production division and continues to publish the best-known book titles in new editions that are updated every year.

Archives of the publisher, albeit only to a small extent, are now in the Saxon State Archives , Leipzig State Archives Department .
