Maßmannplatz dormitory development

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Maßmannplatz dormitory complex was built in Munich from 1948 after the Second World War with American support from students and trainees . The idea for founding the dormitory came from a committed American occupation officer and the art historian Hermann Mau from Munich. Under the direction of the architect Werner Wirsing , who was still a student at the time, a building in a double H-shape was built without building permission, but supported by the city and US occupation forces, which is now a listed building. The coexistence of students and trainees and the self-administration introduced should also promote democracy. Erik Braun , Gordon Ludwig , Jakob Semler , Wolfgang Fuchs and Herbert Groethuysen expanded the residential complex to the west until 1951 . The building is an important testimony to a current of architects who wanted a modernist reconstruction of the city of Munich.

Living

Inner courtyard of the Maßmannplatz residential complex

The residential complex consists of five buildings A – E, in which between 22 and 28 residents each share a kitchen and a lounge. The houses are all connected and surrounded by several gardens. They close around a large courtyard. Two large balconies connect houses D and A and houses C and B.

A total of 124 single rooms with a living space of 10 to 15 m² are available, several showers and toilets as well as a lounge and a kitchen per house.

The residents themselves determine the occupancy of the rooms in a recording session. The admission sessions take place two to four times a year, as required. However, guest rooms are always offered at short notice.

Cultural life

Festivals

The highlights of the cultural life in the Maßmannplatz residential complex are the three big festivals, the Maßmann Carnival, the May Festival and the Summer Festival. These are organized by one of the houses, but all residents help out. The festivals are mostly connected with live music and shows and for the May festival with the traditional maypole erection.

Sponsorship

The sponsor of the home is the Verein Wohnheimsiedlung Maßmannplatz eV, founded on July 22, 1949. V. The association has around 120 members, mostly former residents. The twelve-member board, which is elected at the general meeting, is actively involved in the association's work. Four board members must be active residents, two of whom again automatically hold the highest offices of self-government.

The self-administration consists of several bodies that are elected every year.
