Wittgendorf residential tower

The residential tower Wittgendorf (Polish Wieża rycerska w Witkowie ) is the ruin of a medieval residential tower in Witków (German Wittgendorf ) in the municipality of Szprotawa ( Sprottau ) in the Lubusz Voivodeship in Poland.

history

The residential tower was built on an artificial elevation in the swampy area. The building was probably built in the 14th century when the von Necher owned the place. At the beginning of the 15th century the von Warnsdorf family came into possession of the place. After 1548 Fabian von Schoenaich was the owner. At that time, the residential tower made of quarry stone was raised by brickwork. A single-storey outbuilding with a curved floor plan and hipped roof was built on the southeast side . There you can find the initials FB in a lintel, possibly Franz Parr from Haynau.

After the von Dohna and von Redern owners became owners, the town of Sprottau acquired the estate in 1730. After the transition to Poland in 1945, the residential tower was used as a storage room for a PGR . Then the residential tower was converted into a museum depot. In 1989 the building was privatized.

Building

The tower, built on a square floor plan, is approx. 12 meters high and has a hipped roof covered with wood shingles. The field stone foundations extend up to four meters deep and rest on an oak frame. Inside, the vaulted rooms on the ground floor have been preserved. On the first floor there are late Gothic wall paintings showing a crucifixion group and a representation of George .
