Südpfalz barracks

The Südpfalz-Kaserne is a barracks of the Bundeswehr in Germersheim . It is the location of parts of the Air Force Training Battalion .

history

The barracks opened in 1965 and was initially named after the Lieutenant General of the Wehrmacht Hans von Sponeck , who was murdered by the National Socialists in World War II . In 2015 it was renamed "Südpfalz-Kaserne" because of its role in the extermination of Jews and war crimes during the Russian campaign, despite individual protests from the population.

On February 1, 2020, over 100 returnees from China who had been flown from the Chinese city of Wuhan in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic were temporarily quarantined in the barracks .

Around 1,300 soldiers and civilian members of the Bundeswehr are active on the 42-  hectare property  . There is an on- site shooting range about one kilometer west of the barracks .
