Woldemar von Tiesenhausen

Ernst Woldemar von Tiesenhausen (Russian Влади́мир Гу́ставович Тизенга́узен , born February 25, 1825 in Narva ( Livonia ); † February 2, 1902 in St. Petersburg ) was a Russian orientalist who was mainly active in the field of history and numismatics .

Woldemar von Tiesenhausen came from the Baltic German aristocratic family Tiesenhausen and was the son of Lieutenant Colonel Gustav von Tiesenhausen, who was in Russian service. He attended high school in St. Petersburg and studied oriental languages ​​at the University of St. Petersburg (diploma in 1848). He was a student and employee of Christian Martin Frähn . In 1841 he entered the Russian civil service. From 1861 he was a member of the Imperial Archaeological Commission, from 1894 to 1900 assistant to its president.

In 1893 he became a corresponding member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences .
