Bernhard Dorn (born May 11, 1805 in Scheuerfeld , † May 31, 1881 in St. Petersburg ) was a German-Russian orientalist .

Life

Dorn studied first theology in Halle and Leipzig , then oriental languages, completed his habilitation in Leipzig in 1825 and received the professorship in oriental languages ​​at the Imperial University in Charkow in 1826 , which he did not take up until 1829.

Transferred to the Oriental Institute in St. Petersburg as Professor of Asian History in 1835 , he was appointed a member of the Academy of Sciences in 1839 , Director of the Asian Museum in 1842 and Senior Librarian of the Imperial Library in 1843. From 1859 he was a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences , from 1860 a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and from 1864 a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .

In the years 1860–1861 he made a trip to the Caucasus , to Mazandaran and Gilan south of the Caspian Sea, from where he returned with rich scientific yield. He died on May 31, 1881 in St. Petersburg as a Russian citizen.

Dorn's scientific endeavors were initially directed towards research and study of the history and language of the Afghans , including through:

  • Grammatical remarks on the language of the Afghans (St. Petersburg 1845),
