from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wolf B. Frommer (born February 23, 1958 ) is a German biologist at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf.

After completing his doctorate at the University of Cologne, Frommer moved to the Free University of Berlin , where he completed his habilitation in 1994 . In 1990 he was group leader at the Institute for Genobiological Research GmbH in Berlin (today Max Planck Institute for Molecular Plant Physiology in Golm, Potsdam), from 1992 assistant professor . In 1996 he took up his position as professor of plant physiology at the University of Tübingen , where he also became director of the Center for Plant Molecular Biology in 1997. In 2003 he moved to the Department of Plant Biology at Stanford University as a professor . Here he was also director of the Carnegie Institution for Science until the beginning of 2016 . In April 2017 he took up a Humboldt Professorship at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf.

Frommer's research focus is on the subject of "sugar transport". Together with his group, he identified the first plant genes for sucrose, amino acid, ammonium and nucleobase transporters and was able to show that the sucrose transporter is essential for long-distance transport and the distribution of assimilates in the plant. He discovered allosteric regulation of transporters in complexes, systematically analyzed the interaction of transporters with their regulators and developed biosensors for sugars, amino acids and plant hormones as well as a method that allows the activity of proteins to be studied in vivo.

Frommer was awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 1998 and the Körber Prize for European Science in 2001. He has been a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science since 2003 . In 2012 he received the Laurence Bogorad Award for Excellence in Plant Biology , in 2015 he became a member of the Leopoldina - National Academy of Sciences. In 2018 he received the Taiwanese Tsungming Tu Prize .
