Wolf-Dieter Stempel (born July 7, 1929 in Landau in the Palatinate ) is a German Romance studies and linguist.

life and work

From 1940 to 1949, Stempel attended the Altsprachliches Gymnasium Landau . He studied Romance Philology and Latin at the Universities of Marburg (1949–1951), Aix-en-Provence (1951), Sorbonne (1951–1952) and Heidelberg (1952–1954). There he received his doctorate in 1954 with the dissertation The Romanesque fruit tree designations. A morphological study. With 4 maps (not in print). He went to the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn with his teacher Harri Meier and was his assistant there until 1962 (on leave from 1958). He qualified as a professor in 1962 with the work Investigations on Sentence Linking in Old French (Westermann, Braunschweig 1964) and in 1963 (after rejecting an offer from the Justus Liebig University of Gießen ) became Professor of Romance Philology at the University of Bonn. From 1967 to 1973 he taught at the University of Konstanz , from 1973 to 1985 (after rejection of a call to the Georg-August University in Göttingen ) at the University of Hamburg and from 1985 until his retirement in 1994 (as successor to Helmut Stimm ) at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich. He took over the project of a large dictionary of medieval Occitan (DOM), which he headed until 2012 (successor: Maria Selig ). Stempel was part of the interdisciplinary research group Poetics and Hermeneutics .

From 1982 to 1988, Stempel was a member of the Senate of the German Research Foundation . He has been a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 1988 and of the Academia Europaea since 1990 . He has received the Werner Heisenberg Medal from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (2000) and an honorary doctorate from the University of Cologne (2002).
