Wolf Isselhard

Wolf Isselhard (born December 31, 1930 in Leverkusen ; † June 5, 1998 in Cologne ) was a German physician , university professor and rector of the University of Cologne .

Study and Research

From 1950 to 1955 Wolf Isselhard studied medicine in Cologne. With his work, studies of which occur in different J131 radiation exposure of the thyroid gland in serum J131-labeled organic iodine compounds , he was a PhD . He then spent a year in the USA and received his license to practice medicine in 1956 . In 1964 he completed his habilitation on the subject of comparing cardiac metabolism in various methods of artificial cardiac arrest and subsequent reperfusion (blood circulation) and was awarded the high-rise foundation prize for this work . Isselhard's main research areas were the energy metabolism of organs in oxygen deficiency situations and the subsequent recovery, as well as the preservation of organs for transplants. Together with his colleagues he wrote over 120 publications and book chapters as well as numerous lectures. From 1971 he was co-editor and from 1977 editor of the European Journal of Applied Physiology and Occupational Physiology .

Academic functions

In 1969 Isselhard took over the chair for experimental surgery and was simultaneously head of the surgical clinic and polyclinic at the University Clinic in Cologne . In 1970 he became a full professor and director of the Institute for Experimental Medicine. From 1972 to 1973 and from 1986 to 1991 Isselhard was dean of the medical faculty. From 1973 to 1975 he was rector of the University of Cologne. In addition, he was involved in numerous other, also honorary, functions at the university.

In 1996 Wolf Isselhard retired , but remained director of the Institute for Experimental Medicine until his death. Two weeks before his death, he was awarded the University Medal by Cologne University.
