Wolfgang Glänzel

Wolfgang Joachim Glänzel (born April 13, 1955 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) is a German information scientist and professor at the Catholic University of Leuven .

life and work

After graduating from high school in Frankfurt (Oder), Wolfgang Glänzel studied mathematics at the Loránd Eötvös University in Budapest until 1979 and then worked as a research assistant at the Mittweida University of Applied Sciences . In 1980 he returned to Budapest and worked at the library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (UAW). He worked in the field of bibliometry or scientometry and applied probability theory and received his doctorate in 1984 from Loránd Eötvös University. 1990–1991 and 1995–1996 he was a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation . In 1997 he was awarded by the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Leiden to PhD for work on a stochastic approach to citation analyzes. A bibliometric methodology with applications to research evaluation . Since 2002 he has been director of the Center for R&D Monitoring (ECOOM) at the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven). In 2005 he was appointed professor there. Glänzel also works at the UAW's Department of Science Policy & Scientometrics .

Glänzel has published more than 400 scientific articles on various aspects of bibliometrics and scientometrics, more than 300 of which have been peer-reviewed . He is considered one of the most prolific authors in this field of science. In 1999 he was awarded the biannual Derek John de Solla Price Medal by Scientometrics magazine for outstanding achievements in the field of quantitative science research. He has been Editor-in-Chief of Scientometrics since early 2014 and visiting professor at the Kent Business School at the University of Kent since June 2014 .
