Wolfgang Graninger

Wolfgang Graninger (born November 26, 1948 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian infectiologist , professor emeritus at the Medical University of Vienna and head of the clinical department for infections and tropical medicine at the Vienna General Hospital .

Life

Graninger studied medicine at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1974. He completed a second doctorate in philosophy, psychology and human genetics in 1978. From 1974 he was assistant at the Institute for Blood Group Serology in Vienna, from 1976 at the Chair for Chemotherapy at the University Clinic for Chemotherapy. In 1985 he completed his habilitation on the diagnosis and treatment of infections and tumors.

In 1990 Graninger was appointed associate professor. In 1991 he became a member of the board of directors of the Chemotherapy Clinic. Since 1992 he has been head of the Clinical Department for Infections and Chemotherapy at the Vienna University Hospital.

Activity as researcher, teacher and doctor

Graninger published scientific papers on antibodies , hereditary traits, and twin research. Later he also researched sepsis parameters and the areas of antibiotics and antimycotics . There was also research on tropical medicine abroad. Based on its studies on the antibiotic clindamycin in malaria therapy, the WHO recommended this form of therapy for malaria tropica .

He is the editor and reviewer of several medical journals and has been involved in the organization of several specialist congresses.

The study commission of the University of Vienna awarded Graninger the title Teacher of the Year in 1996 for his teaching activities . He gives his antibiotics lectures with “brains, wit and heart” and “pitch black humor”.

As a doctor at Vienna General Hospital, he is in demand all over the world and is "repeatedly flown in by heads of government for secret treatment". Graninger was the attending physician in autoimmune disease of Thomas Klestil , which eventually led to the death of the Austrian Federal President. On October 1, 2014, he gave his farewell lecture at the Vienna General Hospital.
