Wolfgang Knoll

Wolfgang Knoll (born July 4, 1949 in Schwäbisch Hall , Germany ) is a German biophysicist and recipient of the Wilhelm Exner Medal .

Life

After graduating from high school, Wolfgang Knoll studied physics and later biophysics at the University of Konstanz , where he wrote his dissertation in the field of biology . In 1982 he became head of a junior research group at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz . In 1991 he was appointed to the Riken Institute in Tokyo and from 1993 to 2008 he was appointed director of the Max Planck Society . This was followed by positions as Temasek Professor at the National University of Singapore and at the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering . Wolfgang Knoll has been Scientific Director of the Austrian Institute of Technology since 2008 .

Act

Wolfgang Knoll has contributed to establishing the biophysics of membranes as a research topic at the interface between physics , chemistry , biology and materials and engineering sciences . In addition, his work created the conditions for using boundary light in a wide range of optical instruments, such as for optical sensors.

He has been a member of the Academia Europaea since 2017 and of the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 2010 .
