Wolfgang Lucht

Wolfgang Peter Lucht , born Wolfgang Wanner (born May 30, 1964 in Sindelfingen ) is a German physicist and geography professor specializing in climate research , earth system analysis and sustainability science . He is Chair of the Earth System Analysis Department at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and holds the Alexander von Humboldt Chair in Sustainability Science at the Geographical Institute of the Humboldt University in Berlin .

In July 2016 he was appointed to the Advisory Council for Environmental Issues to advise the Federal Government . Wolfgang Lucht has already published numerous publications on the subject of sustainability , earth system analysis and climate change . Among other things, he was co-author and lead author in several reports of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ( IPCC ). Clarivate Analytics counts him among the most cited researchers in the world.

Life

Wolfgang Lucht studied at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and obtained his diploma in the field of mathematical physics in 1990 and his doctorate in the field of extraterrestrial physics in 1993 . He continued to work as a postdoc at the same institute before moving to the Center for Remote Sensing and Department of Geography (Boston University) in 1994 . There he was involved in the development of NASA's MODIS satellite as a project manager until 1998 . Wolfgang Lucht has been employed at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research since 1999, where he worked as a group leader until 2007. From 2007 to 2008 he took over the management of the Earth System Analysis department , which he has held again since 2012 and from 2008 to 2012 the management of the Climate Impacts and Vulnerability department . From 2005 to 2009 Wolfgang Lucht taught as a professor at the Institute for Geoecology at the University of Potsdam . Since 2009 he has held the Alexander von Humboldt Chair in Sustainability Science at the Geographical Institute of the Humboldt University in Berlin. In 2016, he was appointed to the seven-member Advisory Council for Environmental Issues to advise the Federal Government .

research

Wolfgang Lucht works and researches on various issues in the fields of earth system analysis and modeling, climate change and sustainability sciences. He deals with the interactions between humans and the environment, as well as the effects of climate change on the Earth system, the transformation of the biosphere by humans and processes of land use change.
