career

The young goalkeeper, who grew up at FV Mombach 03, moved to FSV Mainz 05 in the 1970/71 season in the then second division of the Regionalliga Südwest. Under coach Erich Gehbauer he played 21 league games and Wolfgang Kneib had to be content with the role of substitute . The ex-Mombacher made his debut on the start day of the season, August 16, 1970, in a 1-1 draw at VfR Frankenthal in the Regionalliga. In his second year with the 05er, 1971/72, however, rival Kneib under the new coach Bernd Hoss was just ahead of Orben with 18 appearances. Mainz took fourth place and with Gerd Klier (21 goals) and Herbert Renner (12 goals) attacked dangerous strikers.

When FSV Mainz 05 was able to win the championship in the Regionalliga Südwest in the 1972/73 season , Orben guarded the goal of the Bruchweg Stadium team in 19 games. The dangerous attack with Renner, Klier and Manfred Kipp scored 80 goals. In the last year of the old second-rate regional league, 1973/74, Orben only made three appearances behind Kneib (27 games), but the FSV ended up in fifth place. In the first two years in the new 2nd Bundesliga, 1974 to 1976, the Rheinhessen occupied the midfield places eleven and twelve and Orben had been in goal in 37 games. In the summer of 1976 he joined the SG Harxheim and was active there in the amateur field until 1986.
