Wolfgang Schetelich

Wolfgang Schetelich (born July 3, 1919 in Dresden , † November 16, 1985 in Leipzig ) was a German organist .

Life

Schetelich studied organ from 1935 to 1938 at the Dresden Music Academy with Hanns Ander-Donath and then with Karl Straube and Günther Ramin at the State Conservatory of Music in Leipzig . From 1936 to 1939 he was assistant choirmaster and prefect of choir at the Lukaskirche in Dresden .

After the Second World War , he went to Leipzig and was organist and cantor at the Heilandskirche in Plagwitz from 1948 to 1950 . From 1947 Schetelich was a lecturer in organ studies and from 1969 head of the organ department at the Leipzig University of Music, in 1981 he was finally appointed professor. Matthias Eisenberg and Michael Schönheit are among his most famous students .

Schetelich was mainly concerned with the organ works by Johann Sebastian Bach . He also made a name for himself as an expert in organ building and organ restoration.

He was married to the Indologist Maria Schetelich.
