Wolfgang Schmatz

Wolfgang Schmatz (born April 1, 1962 in Amberg ) is a German triathlete and was Ironman amateur world champion in his age group (2012, 2013 and 2017). He was listed on the Ironman Hawaii Age Group Records table .

Career

After studying voluntary jurisdiction at the Bavarian University of Applied Sciences in Starnberg , Schmatz began working for the Bavarian state government as a qualified legal clerk (FH). Schmatz lives in Kümmersbruck, is married and has a daughter.

Wolfgang Schmatz got to know the triathlon in the 1980s with the Bundeswehr on the Jedermann Distance and since then he has completed around thirty Ironman races around the world. Schmatz is trained by Susanne Buckenlei and he starts for the CIS-Amberg association. Schmatz currently holds the world record in his age group at the Ironman Hawaii (as of October 2017), in which he has participated nine times so far. His best time on the long distance triathlon is 9:08:43 hours (established in 2003 at the Challenge Roth ).
