from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wolfgang Stryi (* 1957 in Rottweil ; † 2005 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German bass and double bass clarinetist, tenor saxophonist and a permanent member of the Ensemble Modern .

Live and act

For twenty-four years Wolfgang Stryi participated in the concerts and discography of contemporary classical music by the grassroots-democratically organized Ensemble Modern. As its member he has given concerts worldwide and has received numerous international awards.

He dealt with the balance of interpretation , improvisation and composition and had a lasting impact on the ensemble's program. A documented conversation with Péter Eötvös from the year 2000 describes difficulties and practical solutions in the creation and interpretation of ensemble and orchestral works with improvisational and compositional elements.

As part of the collaboration between the Ensemble Modern and Frank Zappa, Wolfgang Stryi took part in the CD Yellow Shark . The world premiere took place in 1992 in the Alte Oper Frankfurt.

In addition, he arranged concert readings with Hartmut Barth-Engelbart and played in a duo with Alfred Harth , with whom he recorded the CD Modern Post in 1997 .

In his birthplace, Wolfgang Stryi played a summer concert with an unusual program with the Münster organist Peter Strasser in 2002. Among other things, it also contained the arrangement of the Sonata in G minor by Johann Sebastian Bach for saxophone and church organ.

To commemorate him, Rolf Riehm dedicated the composition apricot trees are there, apricot trees are there . The world premiere took place on May 6, 2006 in Witten, at the Days for New Chamber Music, and in 2010 it was performed at the Frankfurt Opera.

Individual evidence

  1. “Since 1981, almost from the beginning, Wolfgang Stryi has played with the Frankfurt Ensemble Modern. In this group of individualists, who were entirely dedicated to the performance of contemporary music, the bass clarinetist, born in Rottweil in 1957, found the ideal forum for his understanding of instrumental virtuosity, which always tried to combine solo, mostly improvised performances and community projects. So he joined the Ensemble Modern as a permanent member in 1983 - completely against his previous convictions. "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, February 28, 2005
