Wolfgang Weißmüller

Wolfgang Weißmüller (born November 23, 1950 in Kelheim ; † March 25, 2005 ) was a German prehistoric scientist . He was a renowned expert on the Paleolithic and prehistory of Bavaria .

Scientific career

Wolfgang Weißmüller grew up in Kelheim (Lower Bavaria). After graduating from high school, he completed an apprenticeship as an industrial photographer from 1970 to 1973. From 1974 he studied prehistory , classical archeology and paleontology at the universities of Erlangen, Vienna and Freiburg. In 1983 he received his doctorate from Konrad Spindler with his thesis Post-Mesolithic Finds from Caves and Abrises using the example of the southern Ries border area at the University of Erlangen . In the 1980s, he was temporarily responsible for the local excavation management at the Middle Pleistocene cave ruins of Hunas , district of Nürnberger Land. From 1984 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Erlangen. In 1987 he began work on the flint artifacts of the lower layers of the chair rock grotto , with which he completed his habilitation in 1993 in Erlangen. From 1993 to 1997 he was senior assistant at the Institute for Pre- and Protohistory at the University of Erlangen.

A commemorative publication in recognition of the scientific achievements of Wolfgang Weißmüller appeared in 2013 in the series of the Erlangen Institute for Prehistory and Early History.
