Wolfgang Wernsdorfer (* 1966 ) is a German physicist who deals with experimental solid-state physics.

Wernsdorfer completed an electrician apprenticeship in Würzburg (with Elektro Schäfer) from 1981 and studied physics at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg and at the École normal supérieure de Lyon (1991 to 1995) after completing the vocational high school in Würzburg (graduation in 1988 ). He received his PhD from the University of Grenoble (Louis Néel Magnetism Laboratory and Low Temperature Laboratory) in 1996. In 2002 he completed his habilitation in Grenoble. In 2004 he became research director at the Institut Néel of the CNRS . In 2016 he received a Humboldt Professorship at KIT .

He deals with nanomagnets, the quantum effects that can be observed in them and their application in spintronics . As a doctoral student in Grenoble, he developed a nano- SQUID , which is used as a measuring device for the magnetic properties of nanostructures. He developed electronic circuits in which the current is controlled by magnetic fields (with magnets made of individual molecules ) and is working on integrating these into conventional CMOS chips. In addition, he also explores the coupling of magnetic molecules in hybrid quantum systems to quantum dots, optically active ions, superconductors, and quantum nanomechanics systems. One goal is to develop technology for quantum computers. Methods of supramolecular chemistry and scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopes are used .

Wernsdorfer received the CNRS bronze medal in 1998 and its silver medal in 2016, the Agilent Europhysics Prize of the European Physical Society in 2002 , the Olivier Kahn International Award of the European Institute of Molecular Magnetism in 2006, the Special Prize of the French Physical Society in 2012 and an ERC Advanced Grant in 2008. For 2019, Wernsdorfer were awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize and the Hector Science Prize, and for 2020 the Dominique Givord Award of the European Magnetism Association.
