Wolfgang Wessnitzer
Wolfgang Wessnitzer (also Weßnitzer ; baptized August 27, 1629 in Nuremberg ; † August 31, 1697 in Celle ) was a German organist and hymn composer .
Life
Wessnitzer was a student of Heinrich Scheidemann . In 1654 he had applied in vain for a position as organist in Hamburg, but was instead appointed court organist in Celle in August 1655 as the successor to his competitor Albert Schop . In 1679 he also took over the office of city organist. He was also the editor of the Celle-Lüneburg hymn books of 1661 and 1665.
Works
In 1661 Wessnitzer wrote the melody for the song of Jesus, my life, life ( EG 86), the text of which was written in 1659 by Ernst Christoph Homburg .
