Classification / content:

In his works, the South Korean artist Woo, Jong-Taek asks himself the question of the origin, the where from of humanity and the whole universe. One of the mainsprings in his work is a deep understanding of nature. Meditating in nature, knowing about the forces arising there, forms the basis of internalization. This meditation in nature, the knowledge of the forces arising there, forms the basis of internalization, from which the eruptive image genesis finds its way to the hand-made paper Hanjin . One can assign the artist's works to Zen painting. The symbol of the Taotic ying and yang - the divided circle with two surfaces in black and white - stands for polar opposing but nevertheless related forces or principles, perfectly symbolizes this field of tension. The opposites complement each other and form a perfection in their harmony. This tension can also be found in Woo's factory in Jong-Teak. Contemplation and action would be called the opposites here. The approach in Zen painting is fundamentally different from Western art. Paper as the carrier of the composition does not allow any correction - if a line is not successful, the entire picture concept fails. It is precisely this that forces the artist to internalize the image idea in an abstract manner. This is where the biggest difference to western painting lies. In Korea, classically executed ink works are usually classified as “ Traditional Korean Paintings ”, which, however, does not do justice to the works of the artist Woo. The assignment to Zen painting seems more appropriate. The artist follows the basics of calligraphy, which serve as inspiration and which he follows as a guideline, but he freely implements them.

Effect of the works:

His powerful works are characterized by an expressive energy that is overwhelming for the viewer. At the same time, his works exude calm. In his work, Woo strives to create a mood and atmosphere that should trigger emotions in his viewers. The visualization of the essence of things, their creation processes and, if necessary. Characteristics are the goals of the artist. His works convey to us the forces in nature that lie behind the visible and tangible natural phenomena and bring us as viewers into connection with them.
