description
Woodend could be a design by Alexander Thomson , but it is most likely by his partner Robert Turnbull . The villa, built from 1875 to 1876, has features of Greek and Egyptian architecture that are typical of Thomson's work. The front of the two-story building faces the street and thus faces north. Woodend is made of hewn rubble stone . Corner stones stand out on the edges of the building and a decorative band runs at floor level. The front has two vertical window axes. The window openings are decorated with blind pillars or simple window posts. A square promontory protrudes from the right side of the facade . Above this, the building closes with a slate-covered gable roof . The entrance area is framed by pillars. Woodend has a cellar. The adjacent Villa Dunluce to the west was also planned by Thomson and has similar architectural features.
