investment

The subway has only been running here since the early 1940s, but the station was built more than seventy years earlier as a stop for a suburban railway. In front of the station building there is a wide open area that was once used as a loading area for coal and was later converted into a car park. The main entrance is at the end of a short cul-de-sac that leads to Woodside Park Road. A letterbox with the initials VR (Victoria Regina) is embedded in the front ; these stand for Queen Victoria , who ruled at the time the route opened. A side entrance is on the west side of the station. Both platforms are connected by a footbridge that can be used without a valid ticket. The architecture of the station building from Victorian times has largely been preserved.

history

The plans for the station go back to the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway (EH&LR), which was taken over by the Great Northern Railway (GNR) in 1867 . The GNR opened the railway line between Finchley Central and High Barnet on April 1, 1872 . The station was initially called Torrington Park , received the name still in use today in 1882 and was rebuilt in 1889.

With the Railways Act 1921 , all railway companies in the country were combined into four large companies, with the GNR merging with the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1923 . As part of the Northern Heights project, the railway line to High Barnet was integrated into the underground network. U-Bahn operations began on April 14, 1940. Both the U-Bahn and the railway ran on the route for a short period of time, with the last LNER train running in March 1941.
