Woody Woodpecker (in German earlier also Hacky the Specht ) is a comic character created by Walter Lantz .

The figure is a helmeted woodpecker who is particularly noticeable because of his penetrating to crazy demeanor and his distinctive smile. Woody Woodpecker originally had blue feathers, a red belly and two teeth in its beak. In the 1940s, it took on its final appearance with red feathers, a white belly and a beak without teeth.

The animated films with Woody Woodpecker were produced by the Walter Lantz animation studio and published by Universal Studios from November 25, 1940; the last one was produced in 1972. From 1957 the films were also shown on television.

The first film Woodpecker appeared in was Knock, Knock , in which he has not yet starred. But it soon became more popular. In 1944 the character was further elaborated in The Barber of Seville . He gained extraordinary popularity in 1947 with the Woody Woodpecker song , in which his special laugh was also used.

Between 1947 and 1984 Woody Woodpecker was the protagonist in more than 200 comic books. In these comics, his family consists of his girlfriend Winnie, niece Splinter, and a nephew Knothead. The niece wears her head feathers tied in a ponytail and is dressed in a skirt.

Other characters who appear in the Woody Woodpecker cartoons include Andy Panda, Buzz Buzzard, Wally Walrus, and Gabby Gator.

In the 1998 and 1999 seasons , Woody Woodpecker was advertised on the Williams team's Formula 1 vehicles, FW20 and FW21 .
