geography
The Shire consists of five individual areas, all of which are within the Central Highlands Region in the east of the state. All settled residents live in the settlement of Woorabinda about 120 km west of Rockhampton . The second largest area in the north of Duaringa is called Balcomba, but it has no significant settlement.
history
The Aborigines in Woorabinda are the descendants of indigenous people who lived in the Dawson Valley, about 200 km south. As the white settlements spread more and more, an Aboriginal settlement was built near the town of Taroom around 1910 as a camp for the indigenous people who had been robbed of their land. When the dam was built in Nathan Gorge, the settlement had to be relocated. The state government acquired land near Wooroona and established the new settlement of Woorabinda there in 1927. The area was under state supervision for 75 years and specialized in agriculture. In 2002 the area around the settlement and three areas north of Duaringa and one south of Bauhinia were placed under an Aboriginal Council and the Woorabinda Shire was founded as a local self-government unit.
administration
The Woorabinda Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
