Worms Bible

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Worms Bible is the first full Protestant Bible in German . It was published in 1529 under the title Biblia beyder Allt and Newen Testaments Teutsch by the printer Peter Schöffer den Jüngeren in Worms .

For the most part, it combined parts of the Zurich Bible and the Luther Bible that had already been published . The prophetic texts of the Old Testament were based on the Worms prophets by Ludwig Hätzer and Hans Denck, which had been printed two years earlier . The Anabaptist preacher Jakob Kautz was probably the translator and compiler of the Worms Bible . 45 woodcuts by the painter and graphic artist Anton Woensam were used as illustrationsused. With the combined Worms Bible, the wish of large parts of the people for a complete Reformation Bible in German could be met even before Zwingli and Luther . Two years after the Worms Bible was printed, the first complete Zurich Bible was published. The Luther Bible followed in 1534.

A copy of the Worms Bible that was restored in 2008 is now in the Worms City Library . Another copy is in the possession of the Schwenkfelder Library in North America. The latter was probably acquired by Kaspar Schwenckfeld in Strasbourg as early as 1530 .
