The Vostok subglacial highlands comprise a series of high plateaus in East Antarctica that are completely covered by continental glacial ice . These extend north-north-west-south-south-east and form the eastern extension of the Gamburzew subglacial mountains .
The extent of the highlands was determined by sonar tracking as part of a joint program of the Scott Polar Research Institute , the National Science Foundation and Denmark's Technical University between 1967 and 1979. The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia named it in 1983 after the Vostok , the flagship of the first Russian Antarctic expedition (1819-1821) headed by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen .
