The machine tool factory Glauchau is one of the oldest still existing mechanical engineering factories in Germany. The company is part of the Niles-Simmons-Hegenscheidt Group in Chemnitz .

history

The history of the mechanical engineering company begins in 1883 when Theodor Keil founded it as a smithy in Glauchau . Later known as the "German Machine and Tool Factory", it merged with "Wotan-Werke AG" in Leipzig to form "Wotan-Werke AG Werkzeugmaschinenbau Leipzig-Chemnitz-Glauchau" and merged in 1929 to become "Wotan and Zimmermann-Werke AG Düsseldorf, machine tool factory Düsseldorf-Leipzig-Berlin-Chemnitz-Glauchau ". The production of grinding machines began in Glauchau as early as 1928 .

The company's headquarters were relocated to Glauchau by resolution of the general meeting on May 7, 1938. The company quickly developed into a leading machine tool manufacturer. By 1943, more than 100,000 machine tools and grinding machines had been delivered in Germany, but also to other European countries and North America.

After the end of the Second World War, large parts of the production technology had to be delivered to the Soviet Union as reparations, but the factory remained in the young GDR as "Wotan and Zimmermannwerke AG". With the establishment of the machine tool combinations, the plants became part of the machine tool combination “7. October "Berlin as" WEMA Glauchau ". "WEMA" mainly built special grinding machines as a supplier for the rolling bearing industry. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, “WEMA” was reorganized into the “Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik Glauchau GmbH” in 1990 and not re-privatized until 1994 - the number of employees temporarily fell from 600 to 7 employees. Only the protest of the employees prevented a planned closure of the plant.

In an appraisal for Sächsische Aufbaubank in 1995, an ailing company was described that had amassed 1.3 million euros in debt and a mountain of pending legal proceedings due to mismanagement. In addition, a continuation of the grinding machine manufacturing tradition was prevented by a non-competition clause. In 1996, the now financially involved expert Kaltenberger succeeded in lifting this ban at least in part. With a compensation payment, the non-compete clause could be lifted completely in 1998. Since then, the production profile of WEMA Glauchau has been continuously expanded and developed.

present

The specialization of the machine tool factory Glauchau on grinding machines, in particular on cylindrical grinding machines, surface grinding machines and roller bearing grinding machines, continues in the current further development of grinding machining centers. The machine tool factory Glauchau GmbH has been audited and certified since 2008 with a quality management system according to DIN EN ISO 9001: 2000.

The company's business areas are now divided into:

  • Manufacture and sale of cylindrical and surface grinding machines, grinding machines for machining roller bearings, grinding machining centers
  • Maintenance and modernization of machine tools
  • Contract grinding at our own grinding processing centers
  • Contract milling on our own milling machines
