Wouter Beke

Wouter Beke (born August 9, 1974 in Lommel ) is a Belgian politician of the Christians Democratisch en Vlaams (CD&V). He was initially a senator and has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies since 2014 . Since Marianne Thyssen's resignation on June 23, 2010, he has also been chairman of CD&V. At the local level, Wouter Beke is mayor of Leopoldsburg .

Life

Wouter Beke studied political science at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL), where he received the licensed diploma in 1996. He also obtained a diploma from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in specialized studies in social law (1998) and finally received his doctorate in social sciences from the KUL in 2004. Beke has been employed at the KUL since 1996, where he initially worked as an assistant and doctoral candidate and now as a research fellow .

Wouter Beke's political career began at the local level when he was elected to the Leopoldsburg municipal council in 2001 . He later became aldermen there for social affairs (2004 to 2006) and first alderman of the community (2007 to 2012). After the municipal council elections in 2012, Wouter Beke was finally able to fight for the office of mayor of Leopoldsburg.

In 2003, at the suggestion of Yves Leterme (CD&V) , Beke was appointed Vice President of CD&V. The following year he moved to the Senate as deputy for Stefaan De Clerck (CD&V) . In the federal elections of 2007 and 2010, Wouter Beke was able to win his senatorial mandate due to his preferential votes. Since the federal and regional elections on May 25, 2014, Beke has been sitting in the federal Chamber of Deputies.

Beke has made the leap to the top of the party as acting chairman twice so far. First from March 21 to May 15, 2008, after Etienne Schouppe (CD&V), who himself occupied this position ad interim after the resignation of Jo Vandeurzen (CD&V) , was promoted to State Secretary; and on June 23, 2010 after the resignation of Marianne Thyssen (CD&V). As a result, he has since been confirmed as full party president.
