Georg Saluz (* 1571 in Jenaz ; † January 20, 1645 in Chur , authorized to reside in Lavin and Chur) was a Swiss Reformed clergyman , dean in the church association and reformer in the canton of Grisons .

Life

Georg Saluz, a grandson of Philipp Gallicius , was born in Jenaz in 1571 and studied Protestant theology in Zurich. He married Ursula Widmann from Zurich as early as 1590. In the same year he was accepted into the Evangelical-Rhaetian Synod ; thus he was allowed to work as a pastor in the Free State of the Three Leagues . In the same year he took over the pastoral position in Seewis in Prättigau , which had only recently accepted the Reformed faith after several disputes. At the same time he was appointed pastor in Grüsch . Three years later, he was also given the pastor's post in Schuders , which he retained for no more than a year. In 1602 he gave up his parish work in Grüsch. Four years later, in 1606, he was appointed pastor to St. Martin's Church in Chur and to Antistes , which he held until his death in 1645. In 1624 he was also dean of the Church of God.

Saluz introduced the Reformation in various Graubünden villages, for example in Untervaz (1611), Zizers (1612), in Trimmis (1613) and in Haldenstein (1613), in which he was told by secular Mr. Thomas von Schauenstein and his colleague in Chur at the Regulakirche Johann Pontisella was supported.

In the time of the Bündner turmoil he stood by and supported the reformed church of the canton; however, he could not prevent the ban on religious denominations in Valtellina , Chiavenna and Bormio . In 1618 the Thusner criminal court sentenced him to a fine of 200 gold guilders because he had not fought the Spanish Alliance. The Chur criminal court acquitted him of this fine in 1619; however, the Venice-influenced criminal court in Davos confirms it again. At that time he was banned from church service for a year, but the people of Chur did not abandon their pastor.

In addition to the church, Saluz was also interested in medicine and surgery , advocated for plague sufferers and described the Gany spa in Prättigau and its healing effects. Saluz died on January 20, 1645 in Chur.

Erich Wenneker describes Saluz as a “capable and popular” pastor. Because he was considered very strong, stories were told about him while he was alive. He made a special contribution to the Synod, as he participated in criminal courts at the time of the turmoil in Graubünden and thus defended Reformedism. He also took part in internal synodal conflicts, albeit cautiously.
