geography

Today's Jenaz lies in the valley floor on the Landquart – Davos railway line . Alt-Jenaz , the former center, is 30 meters above sea level on a glacial alluvial terrace and has a village image of national importance. In addition, the hamlet of Rüti to the right of the Landquart and the district of Pragg-Jenaz (formerly called Furna Station ) on the Furnerbach also belong to the municipality. About half of the entire municipal area of almost 26 km² is agriculturally usable (1247 ha; mostly alpine farms). A little over 10 km² (exactly 1008 ha) are covered by forest and wood. In addition, the municipal area comprises 263 ha of unproductive area (mostly mountains) and 77 ha of settlement area.

Jenaz borders on Arosa , Fideris , Furna , Luzein and Schiers .

history

Jenaz was mentioned as Junazis in the second half of the 12th century . At that time Jenazer goods were owned by the Chur cathedral chapter and the Dominican monastery of St. Nicolai while the sovereign rights lay with the rule of Castels . In the 14th century, Walser speaking Walser German migrated to the Rhaeto-Romanic Mittelprättigau.

Jenaz joined the Ten Courts League in 1436 as part of the Castels court . The Court of Castels was divided into Castels-Jenaz and Castels-Luzein in 1662. The St. Peterskirche (from 1511 St. Peter and Paul), mentioned in the second half of the 12th century, was the mother church of St. Antönien and Furna and was reformed in 1526.

Bad Jenaz

In 1733 the community took a spring discovered in Valdavos and had a guest house and bath house built. The Jenaz spa was enlarged in 1766 to accommodate 130 guests, was in operation until the fire of 1834 and was then demolished. The mineral spring there, revised in 1941, is open to the public.World icon

The farming village of Jenaz lived for centuries from cattle breeding in the numerous Alps as well as from growing grain and fruit. The Talstrasse (1843–1863) and the railway connection from 1889 favored the development of the trade (construction, wood processing). In 2000 half of the workforce worked in the industrial sector.

population

In 1850 Jenaz had 806 inhabitants, 1888 997 (railway construction), 1900 820, 1950 1053, 2000 1130. Of the 1158 inhabitants at the end of 2004, 1076 (= 93%) were Swiss citizens.
