The Wright R-2600 Cyclone 14 is an air-cooled aircraft engine made by the American manufacturer Curtiss-Wright . The 14-cylinder double radial engine was developed from 1935 and was one of the most widely used US aircraft engines during World War II .
Development began in 1935 when it became clear that there would be a performance gap between the proven Wright R-1820 and the Wright R-3350 . The result was the R-2600, which was mass-produced from February 1937 and equipped with a radial compressor. The propeller was driven by a propeller gear with a gear ratio i of 16: 9.
The three-part crankshaft was on roller bearings . The one-piece main connecting rod had a slide bearing . The crankshaft housing was made of forged steel.
At first there were problems with the engine lubrication , but these could be resolved with the help of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). Overheating problems later led to the carburetor being exchanged for one made by Holley . By February 1944, all R- 2600s were manufactured at the Lockland facility near Cincinnati . A total of 85,374 engines were manufactured by January 1946.
With this engine, the Boeing 314 , Brewster SB2A , Curtiss SB2C , Douglas A-20 , Douglas B-23 , Grumman TBF , Lioré & Olivier LeO 451 , Lockheed B-37 , Martin PBM , Martin Baltimore and the North American B. -25 equipped.
