history

Named the place after the locks (locks) at the Miami and Erie Canal . Lockland's boom began with the construction of the canal between 1825 and 1845. In 1828, after the completion of four locks in the area, the plan for a parish was submitted by Nicholas Longworth and Lewis Howell. In 1849 Lockland was recognized as a separate parish and received a parish council.

The four locks that gave Lockland its name not only brought the canal boats into the area, but also provided energy for industry by allowing the slope to be used to drive water wheels . With the beginning of the railway age in the 1840s, the importance of canal shipping quickly declined. The Lockland locks were in operation until 1929. Thereafter, the canal was used in this area as a route for today's Interstate 75 . Lockland benefits from being connected to this modern artery.
