Temple of the Marquis of Wu ( Wu hou ci )

The temple of the Marquis of Wu , better: the Wuhou Temple , ( Chinese  武侯祠 , Pinyin Wǔhóu Cí  - "Temple of the Marquis for Military") is one of the most beautiful and oldest temples in the southwest of Chengdu , the capital of Sichuan Province .

The temple complex was first built at the beginning of the 4th century in the Cheng Han period of the Sixteen Kingdoms and is dedicated to the memory of Zhuge Liang (181–234), the “margrave for warfare” ( 武侯 , Wǔhóu ). It was completely restored during the Qing Dynasty (1672), which explains the very good condition of the buildings and sculptures.

Several sculptures can be seen in the individual buildings. Some of the most beautiful are the twenty-eight officials and generals of Shu State , whose characteristics have been recorded in the colors of their faces.

In addition to a lotus pond with some pavilions, there is also the neighboring memorial temple for Liu Bei , which was integrated into the complex at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty .

The temple has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China in Sichuan since 1961 .

There is also a Wuhou Temple ( Wuhou Ci ) in Baidicheng .
