The worm snails (Boettgerillidae) with the only genus Boettgerilla (and two species) are native to Europe and the Caucasus, up to 5 cm long nudibranchs from the suborder of the land snails (Stylommatophora).

features

When stretched, the body is worm-like, i.e. relatively thin in relation to its length. Hence the name of the family comes from. The jacket shield is pointed to the rear in a V-shape. The rudimentary bowl is located in this tip. The back of the foot has a distinct keel. From the breathing hole, jacket channels that are curved extend out to the front and back.

Occurrence and way of life

The worm snails were originally distributed mainly in the Caucasus region. In Central Europe they were very rare; the occurrence had even been overlooked. It could be confirmed retrospectively on the basis of older museum material. Since the 1960s, the Boettgerilla pallens species has spread widely in Central Europe. They live in damp forests, but also in the cultivated landscape. They eat the eggs in the clutches of other larger terrestrial snails, mainly slugs .

Systematics

The worm snails are placed in the superfamily of the Limacoidea , which also includes the snails (Limacidae), the field snails (Agriolimacidae) and the glass snails (Vitrinidae). The worm snails family is not further subdivided. It contains only one genus with two species.
