Wurzel ( English Fred Basset ) is a comic strip about a dog of the Basset breed , which describes its experiences with masters and mistresses from the dog's point of view in a humorous way with ironic comments.

The strip was created in 1963 by the Scottish comic artist Alexander S. Graham (1917-1991). Since Graham's death, the strip has been supervised by the illustrator Michael Martin and designed according to the ideas of Graham's daughter Arran Caith. The target group are especially dog ​​lovers. The 50th anniversary celebrations took place on July 8, 2013 with Arran Graham in Germany in the LiteraturBistro of the Duisburg City Library .

Wurzel first appeared in the British newspaper Daily Mail on July 8, 1963. Since then, over 15,000 comic strips have appeared, including in Italy (as Lillo ), Switzerland , Austria , Norway ( Lorang ), Sweden ( Laban ) and Finland ( Pitko and Retu ). Over 70 anthologies have been published in Great Britain since 1963. A monthly calendar has been published every year since 1978. A total of 14 volumes were published in Germany (from 1976 to 2008), two volumes by B & L Verlag, two volumes by BSE Verlag, three volumes by Goldmann Verlag, four volumes by Heyne Verlag, Frankfurter Bücher Verlag, Societäts Verlag and im Lingen Verlag one volume each. A new anthology is planned for 2014 on the topic of Wurzel's early years (1963–1975). A picture story of Wurzel appears daily in the Ruhr-Nachrichten and in the Kölnische Rundschau .
