XFOIL is an interactive program for the design and calculation of wing profiles in the subsonic range. The basis are the coordinates for defining the two-dimensional profile cross-section, the Reynolds number and the Mach number . XFOIL calculates the pressure distribution on the profile, lift and drag coefficients . The opposite way is also possible: the program varies the wing profile in order to achieve the desired parameters. The program is available under the free GNU GPL license .

history

XFOIL was programmed by Mark Drela as a development tool in the Daedalus project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the 1980s . The further development took place in cooperation with Weit Harold Youngren. The current version is 6.99, from December 2013. The program is still widely used today.

XFOIL's programming language is FORTRAN .

Integration with other programs

The XFOIL algorithm was adopted in other programs.

  • XFOIL was translated into the programming language C ++ . In this form, it became part of the XFLR5 program . In this program, the calculation of the forces on profiles by XFOIL is used to characterize entire aircraft. The XFLR55 is particularly geared towards the design of model aircraft .
  • An implementation was written for the MATLAB program under the title Xfoil for matlab .
  • QBlade implements XFOIL through XFLR5 for the design of rotors for wind turbines .
