In XSkat is free software that enables the card game Skat on Unix -like operating systems to play. However, the software was also ported to non-Unix-like operating systems such as OS / 2 or Microsoft Windows .

The user can play locally against computer opponents or over the network against human opponents on the Internet (either via IRC or under Unix via direct access to the remote X server ). The software also supports the logging of the games using log files , German , French and four-color sheets , as well as different types of points counting. The playing strength of the computer opponent can be configured as well as certain "pub rules", i.e. deviations from the official Skat rules , for example Ramsch , Bock, Kontra and Re .

XSkat was integrated into the Bernie skat program, which applies the Upper Confidence Bounds Applied to Trees algorithm for the first time to games with incomplete information. Bernie simulates various possible card distributions and lets XSkat play the games created in this way to the end.

XSkat and Bernie, along with other skat programs such as Kermit and Zoot, are available as a skat program on the International Skat Server (ISS). A comparison of the strengths of the programs mentioned was published in an article of the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence from 2009.
