The XY Prize - Together Against Crime is a German award which, under the patronage of the Federal Minister of the Interior, has been awarded once a year in autumn by the ZDF television search program Aktenzeichen XY ... unresolved to people who “are exemplary in protecting life , the health or property of fellow citizens. "

History and selection criteria

The XY Prize was launched in 2002 by Eduard Zimmermann , the long-time moderator of the wanted program Aktenzeichen XY ... unsolved , now supervised by Rudi Cerne , and the XY team in the German crime department of ZDF. The XY Prize is intended to honor people who have shown moral courage in everyday life , for example by preventing a crime, helping to solve a crime or helping the victim of a crime. On the one hand, the prize is intended as a reward and recognition; on the other hand, it is intended to give people a positive example and show that help against violence is possible with prudent action. "Nobody should put themselves in danger," said Zimmermann in 2002 when presenting the award, "but without courageous cooperation among citizens, we will leave the field to the wrong people."

Candidates for the XY Prize can be proposed by any private person, organization or police force. The “cases” of selected candidates are presented in the context of the XY broadcast with short cinematic reconstructions, in which, however, other people are shown again and again who did not help. The winners are selected by an expert jury in cooperation with the investigative authorities.

The XY Prize is endowed with 10,000 euros each, which until 2010 was donated by the insurance group HDI-Gerling . The award has been sponsored by the security software manufacturer Kaspersky Labs GmbH since 2012 . As a rule, three awards are given each year to individual persons, two persons or groups of persons; the award ceremonies usually take place in Berlin in September. In 2002, the then incumbent Otto Schily presented the first XY prizes; since then, the award has been under the patronage of the respective federal interior minister .

In 2007 the XY special award was introduced, which honors particularly outstanding courageous achievements. The XY Special Prize has already been awarded three times (2007, 2009 and 2011). In 2009, the award was presented to Dominik Brunner for the first time posthumously and under the name XY Honorary Prize.

A1The award was made posthumously because Dominik Brunner died as a result of the perpetrators' violence. In addition, the award was made retrospectively, as the act occurred only a few days after the official award ceremony.
