Marcel Gleffe

Marcel Gleffe (born May 30, 1979 in Teterow ) is a German who has been working in Norway since 2009 , who saved the lives of more than twenty people in the 2011 attack on the island of Utøya and who became known in Germany as the “savior of Utøya ”.

The roofer Gleffe completed his basic military service with the Army Air Defense Force from March 1999 to the end of July 2000. He extended his military service to participate in a foreign assignment in Kosovo . He left the Bundeswehr as a corporal in the reserve. Since 2008 he lives in Siggerud in Norway .

At the time of the attack, Gleffe was at Utvika's campsite to be on vacation with his parents and a cousin. Startled by the gunfire on the island of Utøya, about 200 meters away, they rushed to the shore together and saw several people calling for help and jumping into the water to escape from the island. Gleffe drove his rented motorboat towards the island several times and rescued at least 20 young people from the water.

The Beredskapstroppen special unit did not arrive until about an hour later and arrested the assassin on the island.

Honors

For his resolute help, Gleffe was awarded the Gold Badge of Honor on September 27, 2011 by the Association of Reservists of the German Armed Forces . One day later, he received the Golden Hen Media Prize and, on October 4, 2011, the First Class Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, although according to the statute of the Order , the first award is usually the second lowest form, the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon , and to people under 40 years of age only the lowest level of the Federal Cross of Merit , the Medal of Merit .

On October 14th, he was awarded a special version of the XY Prize for moral courage in Berlin . In December 2011 Gleffe was awarded the Ludwig Beck Prize for civil courage from the city of Wiesbaden . On June 15, 2012, Gleffe and 19 other people who saved lives in Utøya were awarded the Norwegian Order of Merit Medaljen for edel dåd ( medal for heroic deeds ) in silver.
