The freedesktop.org project (formerly X Desktop Group , XDG ) is a non-profit project in the software industry with the aim of improving the interoperability and common basis of desktop environments for the X Window System . It was founded in March 2000 by Havoc Pennington , Keith Packard is one of the best-known developers of the project .

The development of the specifications and the individual projects runs in close cooperation with the well-known desktops Gnome , KDE and Xfce . The project also works closely with the developers of the X.Org server , which is the most common implementation of the X Window system. The project does not see itself as a classic standardization body. For this task it refers to other projects such as the Free Standards Group or the X.Org Foundation . Rather, the project sees itself as a place for collaboration, to exchange ideas and code, and to work out specifications.

Freedesktop.org also has a software section in which programs can be found that are loosely related to the project objectives and B. improve the interoperability of desktop software.
