The Río Xanil , also called Río Agua Azul in the lower reaches of the Cataratas de Agua Azul waterfalls , is an approx. 30 km long river in the river system of the Río Grijalva . The river has its source in the highlands of Chiapas , flows through the presumably eponymous town of Xanil , flows through a canyon and feeds the waterfalls of Agua Azul before it finally flows into the Río Shumula .

The river serves as bathing water in the area of the village of Xanil and in the lower reaches of the well-known waterfalls of Agua Azul . It is also possible to go kayaking.

In 2017, the flow was greatly reduced by a new river dike, which also endangers the electricity ecosystem.
