Xaver von Segesser von Brunegg (born September 21, 1814 in Lucerne ; † February 10, 1874 there ) was a Swiss architect and hotelier who helped shape the development of tourism in Central Switzerland.

Education and career

Xaver von Segesser von Brunegg, who came from the patriciate of Lucerne, ran the Hotel Rigi Kaltbad, which his father had founded in 1834 until his death . The general development of hotel construction of his time can be seen in his career. He appeared as an architect for the first time in 1845 at the Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern , which was still attached to a classicist building type of noble townhouses, the Hôtel particulier . The Hotel National , built two and a half decades later, is based on French palace complexes of the 17th and 18th centuries; an appropriate representation had to be found for the larger building volumes (and larger number of rooms), a type that became binding well beyond the turn of the century . Even if the building plans bear Xaver von Segesser's signature, one can assume that his brother Joseph Placidus , his nephew Heinrich Viktor and Alphons Maximilian Pfyffer von Altishofen were also involved in some of the building projects .
