Xerotricha is a snail species from the family of Geomitridae in the order of terrestrial snails (gastropod).

features

The comparatively small housings are flat to tower-shaped and have five to six turns. The arched turns can be shouldered slightly. The last turn descends towards the mouth. The mouth is rounded or slightly angled on the periphery. The mouth rim is thin and there may be a lip on the inner rim. The navel is rather narrow. The embryonic convolutions are smooth. The color of the housing varies from whitish to horn-colored and brownish. The surface has more or less strong growth strips or ribs.

In the hermaphroditic genitalia, the spermatic duct, which is not very twisted, opens at an acute angle into the epiphallus. The flagellum is short and thin, shorter than the epiphallus. The epiphallus is also not clearly separated from the spindle-shaped penis for a comparatively short time. The penile retractor muscle attaches to the distal end of the epiphallus. The penis is innervated by the right cerebral ganglion. Two large arrow bags are attached to the vagina, each with a love arrow. Visible only in the section, sit between the vagina wall and the large arrow sacks, as well as two very small, inner arrow sacks. The slightly curved love arrow is rounded at the base and has a narrow leaf at the top. Above the arrow sacks, four branched glandulae mucosae attach to the vagina (or around the vagina) . The free fallopian tube is very short. The stem of the spermathec is very long, the bladder lies below the albumin gland.

Similar genera

The genus Xerotricha differs from the genus Helicella by the arrow sack apparatus. With Helicella , visible from the outside, two smaller accessory or inner arrow sacks (without love arrows) are formed between the actual arrow sacks (which contain the love arrows) and the vagina. These accessory or inner arrow sacks are very small in the Xerotricha species and cannot be seen from the outside. The postembryonic convolutions are covered with fine hairs that have often already fallen out in the adult animals; however, the hairlines can still be seen on the surface of the bowl. .

Geographical distribution and habitat

The Xerotricha species were originally found in southern Europe, North Africa and the Canary Islands. In the meantime, individual species have also been anthropogenically transported to other areas and continents .

Taxonomy

The taxon was established in 1892 by Tommaso di Maria Allery Monterosato . The MolluscaBase places the following species in the genus Xerotricha :

The genus Xerotricha is placed in the tribe and subfamily Helicellini or Helicellinae. This taxon was transferred to the Geomitridae family in 2018.
